| Decorative Arts from Tibet The gallery collects and exhibits, on occasion, writing tables, chests, cabinets, woven works and Thankhas made by Tibetan artisans and monks in that high Himalyan kingdom. As an art form, these works are increasingly difficult to come by, many works having been destroyed in the exodus from Tibet in the 1950s. Works displayed vary in age from early 18th century chests to recently painted Thankhas commissioned by the gallery through the Mountain Institute by Buddhist monks in Eastern Tibet. Earlier and more sophisticated works will be brought into the collection in the future. Balancing inspired design, explosive color and high achievement with spiritual content, utilitarian function and rustic assembly, these objects will continue to be part of the Addison/Ripley gallery inventory as available |
