Born in 1935, Mary Lee Bendolph, a celebrated quilt maker, is one of the strikingly innovative, abstract quilt makers for a group of African American women from Gee's Bend, Alabama. Gee’s Bend is a small rural community nestled into a curve in the Alabama River southwest of Selma, Alabama. Founded in antebellum times, it was the site of cotton plantations. She would make dramatically designed, richly colored quilts with a geometric simplicity reminiscent of Amish quilts and modern art.
