Ana Mercedes Hoyos
Ana Mercedes Hoyos is one of the most significant and distinguished figures in Colombian art today. Her work has been seen internationally since1968 with solo exhibitions in Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Spain and the United States. Her contributions over the last four decades have been recognized through decorations awarded to her by Colombia, the United States and Japan. Four books, with commentaries by well known critics including Eduardo Serrano and Angel Kalenberg, have featured her work.
The artist was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1942 to architect Manuel Jose Hoyos, she studied art at the University of the Andes and the National University in Bogota. Basing her work on the complex reality of Colombian culture, specificaly the people of San Basilio de Palenque, she is equally expressive in painting, sculpture, print-making, collage, photography and textiles through which runs a motif of saturated color, magic and nature.
